Tom Thibs

The Golden State Warriors are in need of a head coach, but it might take some time to name Mark Jackson’s replacement. Owner Joe Lacob has no rush to name a head coach and admitted that it could take months before the coaching search is complete. The Warriors are arguably the most attractive opening out of all the coaching vacancies with an established roster that is led by rising superstar Steph Curry.

Injuries have derailed the Warriors the last couple of seasons and they are looking for a coach that will get them over the hump. The Warriors plan to interview a number of candidates for the job, but Tom Thibodeau is the latest name being thrown around as a possible option. According to Rusty Simmons of the SF Gate, the Warriors are expected to contact the Chicago Bulls for permission to speak with Thibodeau:

“The Warriors are expected to contact the Chicago Bulls to explore the availability of their head coach, defensive whiz Tom Thibodeau, who was an assistant in Boston when Lacob was a minority owner of the 2008 champion Celtics.

They’re also believed to be considering the merits of former NBA head coaches Lionel Hollins, Mike D’Antoni, George Karl and Jerry Sloan, and college head coaches Fred Hoiberg and Kevin Ollie, and are waiting for assistants David Fizdale, Alvin Gentry andNate McMillan, the latter two former head coaches, to complete playoff runs.

But the process starts with Kerr and Van Gundy.”

No clear favorite has been identified by the Warriors, but Steve Kerr and Stan Van Gundy seem to be at the top of the list. Howvever, Thibodeau is a premiere coach in the NBA and any team would be happy to have him. Thibodeau’s rocky relationship with Bulls has made him a viable option for various teams, but he is still under contract and the Warriors would likely have to give up a draft pick.

Thibodeau is known for his defensive prowess, but the Warriors might want to go with a coach that could run a dynamic offense with all of the weapons at his disposal. The Lakers have also shown interest in Thibodeau, but they are currently rebuilding and the Warriors future is significantly brighter. This off-season will be very interesting for the Warriors, let’s hope management is able to get their top choice.

Doc wasn’t available either. That’s why LA sent a draft pick to Boston in exchange for his release.

If you actually read the article, the author writes that the warriors would have to give up a pick to get thibs.
