The Warriors are out of the postseason, but they continue to grab headlines. After firing Mark Jackson, Warriors owner Joe Lacob had suggested that it could take some time before they name their next head coach. However, after initially believing they could not land Steve Kerr, they will make one last push for the five time NBA champion.
The Warriors and its fan base would rather name a coach sooner rather than later and avoid the uncertainty heading into the off-season. Kerr has been rumored to be the favorite to the land the Knicks head coaching gig, especially with Phil Jackson running the show in New York, but that will not stop the Warriors. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Warriors will make one last effort to convince Kerr to become the Warriors 25th head coach in franchise history:
“Golden State’s management group, including owner Joe Lacob, general manager Bob Myers and assistant GMs Kirk Lacob are traveling to Oklahoma City on Tuesday to make a final push to convince Steve Kerr to coach the Warriors, sources told Yahoo Sports. Kerr is working Tuesday’s night playoff game between the Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder as an analyst for TNT.”
Kerr is still part of the TNT broadcast and will be calling Game 5 between the Thunder and Clippers. It looks like Kerr is at the top of their list and the Warriors want to give it one last shot. A few days ago it was reported that the Warriors had moved on from Kerr after being convinced he would sign with the Knicks, but that quickly changed today.
The Warriors have also shown interest in Stan Van Gundy, but it was reported earlier that he is considering the Detroit Pistons. Van Gundy is leaning towards Detroit because they have also offered him to be the President of Basketball Operations. While the Warriors might have the better roster and city, Van Gundy seems intrigued by the Pistons’ offer.
The Warriors have identified their target and will try to convince Kerr to take over a team that won 51 games this year and is primed to contend for an NBA title for years to come.
