Preview: The Golden State Warriors (11-8) got themselves in trouble in their last home game against the Toronto Raptors (6-11). They were faced with a 27-point deficit and came back to win the game on their Oracle Arena floor.
Fans in attendance may have gone into cardiac arrest on multiple occasions in that contest, but that probably will not be the case tonight if the Dubs reproduce that type of effort on the road.
Indeed, Mark Jackson’s group will be away from Oracle for three consecutive games, with the first one starting tonight against the Houston Rockets (13-7). Houston is in an intriguing place to say the least at this time in the season.
They won a big game November 30th on the road against the San Antonio Spurs (15-3) and then lost back-to-back games to the Utah Jazz (4-16) and Phoenix Suns (10-9).
Houston is a team still figuring out their identity in some sense and it would appear as though they will need more time to actually figure it out. Indeed, with news circulating that the Rockets have officially put Omer Asik on the trading block, one has to think his time with the franchise will be short lived.
His eventual departure opens up the door to the acquisition of new players, which in turn means there will be an additional adjustment period for a team that was already facing one.
These issues probably will not sidetrack Houston’s season, but it’s fair to wonder how long they will linger. On the flip side, the Warriors have an identity as well as an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses.
The parts seemingly fit together wonderfully and consequently, the team often looks scary even with Andre Iguodala sidelined.
The matchup tonight will feature two of the best interior defenders in the league in Dwight Howard and Andrew Bogut, which should be interesting. The Aussie will probably try to frustrate Howard by repeatedly hitting him during post-ups and giving him a few extra shoves after the whistle.
Howard’s willingness to accept and then dish back the punishment will go a long way towards deciding the contest. But make no mistake, both teams will let it fly from downtown and that will be tonight’s main focus.
