Following the Warriors 99-90 loss to the San Antonio Spurs last Saturday, assistant coaches Brian Scalabrine and Pete Myers engaged in a heated verbal altercation, likely leading to the reassignment of Scalabrine, according to sources.
Scalabrine was reassigned to the Santa Cruz Warriors, the NBA Developmental League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday.
Mark Jackson cited a “difference in philosophies” with Scalabrine, but reiterated that there is no dysfunction with his team.
“We are excited about what’s taken place up until this point — the culture, the environment with no dysfunction at all,” Jackson said after practice on Tuesday. “That’s comical.”
“I know dysfunction, and that could not be further from the truth, and if it was true, there’d be more people in the choir singing it. That’s entertainment.”
After the game on Saturday, Jackson took an abnormally long time to speak with the media. Usually, Jackson conducts his postgame press conferences 15-20 minutes following the game, but Saturday, he took nearly twice as long to meet with reporters.
When asked why he took longer than usual, Jackson said it was “Just talking, that’s all.”
“I was talking with my staff, not the players,” he continued.
“We were just talking basketball, that’s all.”
Pete Myers has been on Mark Jackson’s staff since Jackson’s hiring in 2011. They were teammates on the New York Knicks from the late 1980s to the early 1990s.
Brian Scalabrine was in his first season as assistant coach with the Warriors after being hired last July. Warriors’ general manager Bob Myers was Scalabrine’s agent for ten seasons during his tenure as a player.
The Warriors (44-27) welcome the Memphis Grizzlies (42-28) to Oracle on Friday.
I like Jackson, and he – along with the GM/owners – have brought the Warriors back to contention. Awesome. End of story. Almost. Now that expectations are raised, Jackson’s weaknesses are more apparent. He cannot effectively manage a game: a rotation works one night and not the next, but he’ll stick with it; or he’ll allow an 18 point lead dwindle to 5 before calling a TO (and then we lose). The offense struggles against good teams, because our guys become stagnant and usually settle for outside shots or turnover the ball in droves. And although their defense is improved, they are having a tough time stopping dribble penetration and that’s not a recipe for postseason success. Coaching can fix these things in practice/games.

Both you guys nailed it. Myers is Jackson’s guy. Obviously, Scalabrine isn’t. If it wasn’t for the G.M., Scalabrine would probably be out of a job altogether.
Most coaches like to keep stuff like that in the locker room. We will most likely have to wait for a book to come out.
