Since entering the NBA out of UCLA, Jason Kapono has made a living out of hitting the 3-pt shot. Kapono is a heralded three point shooter and one of the few people on this earth that could apply to be a “Splash Brother”. After a brief stint in the Greek Basket League with Panathinaikos, Kapono has returned to the NBA and has a shot (pun intended) to land the final spot on the Warriors’ roster.
While Kapono would love to make the team and help them chase an NBA Championship, he understands there’s a chance that he might not get a job offer. In a conversation with Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Kapono admits that he wanted one last crack at making an NBA roster, but life after basketball also seems very appealing:
“I figured why not give it a shot?” Kapono said. “I was just chilling at home and they gave me a call. They’ve got a spot and if I make it, I make it. And if I don’t, I go back to chllin’.”
It’s hard to complain when you’ve had a nine-year career, an NBA championship and two 3-pt shooting titles. He’s already had a career that’s longer than most, but he still might have some gas left in the tank. Kapono is in great shape and with his deadly shooting from beyond the arc, him landing on an NBA roster seems likely. The Warriors might be too deep at this point, but Kapono might ultimately get one last opportunity to play in the NBA.
When Kapono was signed to a training camp contract, it came as quite a surprise. Kapono was enjoying life after basketball when he was contacted by the Warriors and would not mind returning back to that lifestyle. However, playing in the NBA is a privilege, one that most people don’t get to experience. Might as well give it one last shot before calling it a career.
If Warriors do not take Kapono, he should send his resume to the Lakers — who are in REALLY BAD need of a reliable 3-point shooter.
