Sports can be a very narrow sphere at times. The dominant question in athletics these past few months has been whether Kevin Durant did the right thing joining the Warriors.

As captivating as that discussion may be to basketball fans, it’s not like it has any impact on society as a whole.

President Obama didn’t make headlines for commenting on how Durant’s decision is going to change the landscape of the NBA.

However, Obama did attract a lot of attention for weighing in on the controversial decision that another Bay Area athlete made recently.

Colin Kaepernick has been kneeling for the National Anthem as a protest for how this country oppresses people of color.

Obama said that it’s Kaepernick’s First Amendment right to make a demonstration like this, and pointed out that it’s a very important issue that Kaepernick obviously feels strongly about.

It’s hard to quantify whether more people support what Kaepernick is doing than dislike it, but it has generated a discussion on not only the nature of protest, but injustices in our society that need attention.

Stephen Curry recently gave an interview in which he was asked about Kaepernick’s protest, and Curry was supportive, stressing the importance of the freedom of expression Kaepernick is exercising.

Curry also said that he hopes the important conversation that has been evoked by this protest continues into the future.
