Things done today are not exactly done in the same way that they were done decades ago, or even years ago. With the rise of social media, texting, and other forms of communication that allow people to avoid face-to-face conversations, it’s quite amazing that the Golden State Warriors decided to go for 73 wins without actually, well, talking to each other.

And when I say “talking”, I mean in the traditional sense. There wasn’t a big powwow in the locker room to express the desire to go after the record. Nope, none of that. In fact, the powwow happened via group text message that was initiated by All-Star forward Draymond Green.

From Tim Kawakami, columnist for the Mercury News:

Green sent the group text, his teammates talked it over by tapping their cellphones, and the subject was decided: They were going for 73, within reason. “Every once in a while, especially after that last game (the loss to Minnesota last Tuesday), we have to have a talk,” center Festus Ezeli said of the Green message.

It’s quite funny that the best team in the NBA this season hashed out their plan to attack the single-season record over text messages that were sent back and forth between the key members of the team. It almost seems fitting in a way. It defines their season, defines who they are, and really speaks to the camaraderie they have chiseled out together.

There’s no telling what the future holds for this specific incarnation of the Golden State Warriors, but one thing is certain: their desire to go after 73 wins was fostered via text message. In some ways, you have to respect that. They definitely are not a conventional bunch.
