During last night’s victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors sixth man extraordinaire Andre Iguodala suffered a severe left ankle sprain while diving for a loose ball. As he went for the ball, point guard Damian Lillard dove with him and ended up pinning Iguodala’s ankle in an awkward position.

The injury did not look good, but Iguodala managed to stay in the game long enough for him to shoot free throws before heading to the locker room for x-rays and further evaluation. The x-rays, thankfully, came back negative. However, it was learned after the game that the reigning NBA Finals Most Valuable Player will be having an MRI on the ankle today.

From Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports:

Hopefully the MRI comes back with good news for both Iguodala and the Warriors. Missing Iguodala for a considerable amount of time right now won’t really derail their season, but he’s going to be a pivotal part of the club when the playoffs roll around and they need to go to their “Death Lineup” more.

Last season, Iguodala earned Finals MVP by helping push LeBron James into tough shooting nights despite what James’ otherworldly stats said. Every time Iguodala was on the future Hall of Famer, it became a rough time for James. The Warriors will need him in April, May, and June much more than in March.

Iguodala is averaging 7.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists on 48.4 percent shooting, including 35.6 percent from beyond the arc. He’s been dealing with a hamstring injury for a while, but now has an ankle injury to worry about. Hopefully he doesn’t miss too much time.
