There comes a point in an athlete’s career where you can officially deem him/her a star. Stephen Curry has seen his star quickly rise since last season and has now become a household name within the realm of sports. This list contains songs from both his early days in the NBA and his early stages of NBA stardom. His mentions haven’t reached those of a Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant or LeBron James, but everyone has to start somewhere. Music and sports often go hand in hand, and in the case of young Curry that certainly holds true.

Casey Veggies is one of my personal favorites. His last mixtape — Life Changes — is one of my favorite projects of the year. He hails from Los Angeles and is one studio album away from being on the mainstream radar. In the meantime, Veggies likes to mention athletes in songs, and you have to go back to 2010 to find this reference of Curry. This song would’ve made my Top-5 had Veggies not make one crucial mistake: pronouncing “Stephen” as “Steven”. Sorry, but that earns you an honorable mention. Ed Lee would be proud though.

I appreciate Southern California resident The Game mentioning a fellow West Coast star in “Bang Bang”, but this beat just doesn’t do it for me. It’s a shame, because I actually love how Curry was used in this song. Associating guns and NBA players always reaps great results, and while I like both Problem and The Game this song is the exception. They could’ve done better.

The die-hard Warriors fans will remember this tune, which premiered in 2011 and had Monta Ellis fans scrambling to make it their new ringtone. Yung God makes it known that he loves Monta Ellis, and might even be a bigger fan of Monta Ellis than Monta himself. This comes in at #5 on the list by being the only song in history to mention both Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry in the same song. Sadly, Yung God seems to be a fan of every player on the West Coast and even pronounces his love for Kobe Bryant and Laker Nation. We haven’t heard from Yung God since.

What would any Bay Area list be without the presence of The BasedGod? Brandon McCartney, better known as Lil B The BasedGod, has become one of the most influential people in music today. Why? Not because of his bars, but because of — wait for it — his swag. His swag reaches maximum levels on “Flex 36” as he pronounces his appreciation of Curry and associating him with billionaire mogul Donald Trump. The BasedGod is also the only artist in the Top-5 to actually tryout for the Warriors. Long live Lil B.

I’ll be honest, I had no idea who Wavii McFlyy was before conducting this post. In fact, I’m not sure people outside Wavii McFlyy’s family and clique know who he is. Regardless, I was pleasantly surprised to find a softened East Coast vibe to this track. It should come as no surprise after listening that McFlyy calls New York his home, and the Curry reference is subtle yet noticeable. Just imagine if Curry fell to the Knicks at #10 in the 2009 draft.
2) “NKREDIBLE” – Bravioso

Similar to our friend Wavii McFlyy, I didn’t know Bravioso existed until this post. Alas, “NKREDIBLE” makes its way near the top of the list for the up-tempo beat and shockingly concise flow. Combine a beat from Lil B and the flow of Danny Brown and you have something similar to this track. If that’s not your cup of tea, too bad. His flow is disgusting. Turn up.

The only song on the list actually titled “Stephen Curry” makes its way to the top of the list. There are simply too many references of Curry to point out just one, and I don’t want to disrespect what Grenchie J, Bundless or HaadiREAL had originally intended. They clearly want it to be known that they’re not indeed talking about the Warriors point guard, but that doesn’t matter. Quantity is aplenty and the beat is vicious enough to make it the clear choice.
David Lee Bonus: “On the Hill” — The Kid Daytona

During my research, I came across one song that mentions David Lee. With Lee spending much of his career in New York, it should come as no surprise that someone made a song that mentioned the former Florida Gator. You have to respect The Kid Daytona somewhat for putting both David Lee and Amerie in the same bar. This track is one of a kind, and unless another brave artist chooses to use Lee in a song this one takes the title.
