A very lucky fan just made more than 3 grand off of finding Stephen Curry’s mouthguard, which has become famous in recent years for dangling out of Curry’s mouth during free throw attempts.

Of course it also became somewhat infamous when he threw his mouthguard at a fan during game 6 of the NBA Finals when he fouled out.

Regardless of what it’s more associated with, it’s a noteworthy enough item that it sold for $3,190 in an online auction on Sunday morning handled by SCP Auctions.

If Curry was especially attached to this particular mouthpiece, maybe he could have offered to match whatever price it fetched to get it back.

This specific mouthguard was found by a fan at a game in December which the Warriors played on the road.

If a mouthguard from a mundane December game got $3,190, imagine what that mouthguard that hit the fan in the NBA Finals would get at an auction like this.

Unfortunately, the final sale ended up being lower than previously anticipated. Back in June, SCP Auctions vice president Dan Imler predicted that the mouthguard would command somewhere around $5,000.

The mouthguard has Curry’s name on it as well as a carrying case labeled with the back-to-back MVP’s name.

With so much hype surrounding this Warriors team after their historically dominant last two seasons as well as their acquisition of Kevin Durant this offseason, it’s not surprising that such an iconic piece of Warriors’ memorabilia sold for as much as it did.

What I’m not sure about is how the fan who sold it first came into possession of it. I guess he or she just noticed it on the Warriors’ bench after a game and shrewdly swiped it.

Sounds like money well spent, assuming that it’s properly sanitized. Plus it’s a great conversation starter when people walk in and see a mouthguard on display.
