3 out of the 12 players on Team USA are members of the Golden State Warriors. When a quarter of the Olympic roster is made up of Warriors, then suddenly Team USA news indirectly becomes Warriors news.

The team defeated Argentina by a commanding score of 111-74 in an exhibition game played in Las Vegas on Friday night.

Despite numerous star players turning down the opportunity to play for Team USA, the depth of talent that this country offers is astounding. Even a team consisting largely of new pieces still looks like strong favorites to bring the gold medal home to the U.S. for the 3rd straight Olympics.

Remarkably, Team USA hasn’t lost a game in 10 years. Their recent run has become reminiscent of the Harlem Globetrotters, with the best lineups other teams have to offer seeming to ceremoniously go through the motions while treading towards an inevitable defeat.

It’s refreshing that Team USA has built back its aura of invincibility after a stretch from 2002-2006 where they looked shockingly mediocre. In 2002, they finished 6th in the FIBA World Championship. In 2004, they failed to win the gold medal for the first time in 3 Olympics, taking home the bronze instead. In 2006, they suffered a loss to Greece in the semifinals.

It took some self-reflection and determination, but the Redeem Team in 2008 returned Team USA to the pinnacle of international basketball.

Kevin Durant lead the Argentine game in scoring with 23 points. It was also an opportunity for him to share the court with Klay Thompson and Draymond Green for the first time.

Only Durant and Carmelo Anthony remain from the 2012 squad that won a gold medal in London.

Durant has excelled while wearing the Team USA jersey. He started all 8 games for Team USA in the 2012 Olympics and lead the team in scoring with 19.5 points per game, while ranking 2nd on the team in rebounds with 5.8 per game. Durant also shot a remarkable 34-65 from 3-point range for a 52.3% rate during the Olympics in 2012.

Although Team USA failed to return most of its members from 2012, Durant and Anthony were their top scorers, so they seemingly got the most crucial pieces back.

Anything less than a gold medal in Rio would be absolutely shocking. Durant surely wants to use this opportunity to create a rapport on the court with Thompson and Green before they embark on the Warriors’ quest to win a 2nd championship in 3 seasons.
