The Golden State Warriors are going to have to fill out the periphery of their roster with guys who they can get for cheap contracts.
Kevin Durant is expected to re-sign with the team for a gigantic figure this offseason, further increasing the amount of payroll tied up in just a few players.
Anthony Slater tweeted out an interesting option for the Warriors to look at if he can’t find a big pay-day elsewhere: Seth Curry.
It’s intriguing for a multitude of reasons, including the obvious family connections already existing within this franchise.
Although he’s not on the level of his brother Steph, Seth can certainly serve as an outside shooting threat off the bench for a team like the Warriors.
Curry missed all of last season due to a left tibia injury, which is really going to suppress his value on the open market this offseason.
It’s definitely a shame monetarily for Curry because he had such a solid year with the Dallas Mavericks during the 2016-17 season.
Curry started 42 of 70 games he appeared in for the Mavs in 2016-17 and averaged 12.8 points per game while shooting 48.2% from the field and 42.5% from 3-point range.
Nick Young played on the mid-level exception for the Warriors last season, and it’s unlikely that the team would bring him back at that type of figure.
If Young does leave, there’s suddenly outside shooting prowess off the bench they’d need to replace. Curry could definitely fill that niche on this squad.
Whether Curry would even want to join the Warriors and play in his older brother’s shadow remains to be seen, though. He has said in the past it’s not something he really wants to do.
It could definitely be a mutually beneficial relationship between Curry and the Warriors, though, especially if he doesn’t garner sizable offers elsewhere.
Curry could conceivably sign a cheap one-year deal, rebuild his value, and have some fun competing for a championship in the process.
It’s definitely an interesting idea to monitor heading into the free agency period as the team looks to round out its bench.
