The Summer of NBA Legends

Given the NBA lockout, we have not had our customary summer activities to keep us occupied: summer leagues, free agency, trades and of course rumors.

Oh how we miss the rumors. No longer are we talking about a potential Andre Iguodala and Monta Ellis swap; instead those talks have been replaced by revenue sharing, hard caps and a $300 million figure that keeps getting tossed around.

And thus, the Summer of NBA Legends was born. If there was ever a time to talk about some of the greatest teams, players or performances in NBA history, it was now.

No One Likes to Root for Goliath: Ask Wilt and Kareem

If asked to look back through the NBA’s rich history and to come up with the best individual rivalries, the answer is easily Wilt Chamberlain versus Bill Russell and Magic Johnson versus Larry Bird. However, in the case of Chamberlain and Russell, both players played the same position, which in turn made the matchups extremely compelling.

Indeed, before Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon was taking the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing and Shaquille O’Neal to school, the league had already seen two marquee centers face off against one another repeatedly in the postseason.

Shaquille O’Neal’s Legacy on the Line?

With the NBA playoffs set to soon begin, it’s rather easy to get caught up in player legacies. Indeed, the way athletes perform during the postseason has a huge bearing on how we remember or view their careers as a whole. For instance, Tracy McGrady had some incredible playoff performances and yet failed to make it out of the first round of the playoffs of every series that he has played in. No one will mention that his teams were never once favored to win (playing against better teams will often do that), but sadly that is probably how he will be remembered.

We could even make the argument that Kevin Garnett was headed that way until he landed in Boston (although he did make an appearance in the 2004 Western Conference Finals).
