Strengths - Quick guard who glides all over the court. Moves well off the ball, and has good court instincts. Knows how to utilize triple threat position. Has a strong, balanced jumper, which should prove to be a weapon as he matures and improves his consistency. Pesky on-the-ball defender who has the quickness to stay with the fastest guards, and get into the passing lanes. A clever finisher around the hoop, Monta can get to the basket or stop on a dime for the pull-up jumper. He's shown the ability to run the pick and roll, but still needs more experience running the point. Excellent first step and a solid floor game. Monta is a better rebounder than his frame might suggest.
Weaknesses - Ellis drew the 'tweener label coming out into the NBA. He was a prolific scorer on the high school level, but he lacks the prototypical size to play SG in the NBA. The oft-mentioned points of focus regarding Ellis' development center on him getting stronger and developing his left hand dribble. He's improved both facets, but continued work will certainly help. His 3-point shooting has dipped in year two. He's shown the ability to hit the NBA 3, but if he continues to struggle from beyond the arc he might have to cut down the 3s and focus on attacking the basket a la Tony Parker.
Outlook - The heightened emphasis on perimeter contact makes ultra-quick guards like Ellis that much tougher to defend. Questions persist as to what position Monta will play long term, but his Coach, Don Nelson, believes his young guard will have to transition to the PG spot to truly maximize his potential and value. Can he develop the play-making skills to run an offense, or is he an undersized SG? |
