  • OPEN THREAD: RMR Game 2: Warriors vs Mavericks

    Warriors (1-0) vs Mavericks (2-1)
    Game Time: 3:30p

Watch it streaming live (Here's a list of all the games that will be streaming)

Because of the Rocky Mountain Revue's crappy recap, you should check out the Warriors official blog recap to get a better sense of what happened.

The fine folks of Salt Lake City that had attended the first two days of the Rocky Mountain Revue and returned Monday for Day 3 saw something new today. What they saw was Warriors’ style basketball. The same up and down Warriors’ style basketball that has been a staple in the Bay Area since Don Nelson returned as head coach two seasons ago.

    ...

Anthony Randolph spent most of the game driving aggressively to the hole, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Randolph was just 2-of-10 from the floor, but on nearly a half-dozen occasions he could have/should have drawn a foul call after taking hard contact in the lane. Despite a slew of questionable non-calls, the Warriors first round pick still managed to get to the free throw line 13 times, making 11, thanks to his aggressive attacks to the hole.

Hopefully the streaming works. And if it doesn't, NBA tv will show it on tape delay starting at 9pm.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about AR and seeing CJ and BWright (both DNP-CD's). Drop your comments below.

Didn't get a chance to get an open thread up before the game.

The first game for the Warriors in the Rocky Mountain Revue has completed and the Warriors were once again victorious. Check out the recap for full game coverage. Unfortunately the boxscore doesn't seem to be working.

The recap has this photo with this caption:

  • OPEN THREAD: Vegas Game 5 - Warriors vs Raptors

    Warriors (3-1) vs Raptors (1-3)
    Game Time: 3:00p

The final Warriors' game of the Vegas Summer League tips off today against the Raptors. The Warriors spoiled their chance to go undefeated last night against the Kings. With just 17.6 seconds left, the #12 draft pick, Jason Thompson tipped in a bucket to put the Kings in the lead. Seeing that reminded me of the draft when everyone was saying the Kings picked Thompson way too early. But if he works out for them, just goes to show that all those mock drafts and "experts" really don't have much more insight than you and I. But it also reminded me that Mullin and Nelson threw out feelers that they wanted Thompson possibly getting the Kings to jump the gun and "reach" for him at #12. Anyways, so I was curious to see how he's doing so far and he's got some nice numbers going - 15 points on 53% shooting and 8.5 boards in 27 minutes a night. That's better than our boy Brandan Wright is doing in 30 minutes a game.

Anyways, where was Marco last game? 1-10 shooting? 6 points and 5 fouls in just under 20 minutes? Ouch. Summer league, D-league, NBA, or pickup, that's just awful. As for surprises, CJ Watson had his second big game in a row. 24 points, 6 assists and another 4 steals. The guy is a straight thief. Brandan Wright didn't shoot so well, but did collect 11 boards, his first double digit rebound game this summer.

And last but not least, there was the rook, Anthony Randolph coming back from an ankle injury to score 16 points and grab 6 boards. Our summer league correspondent, dreamleague, had nothin but good things to say about watching Randolph up close, Summer Scout: A new Mully-ball Era?

Today, the Raptors fire back at our Warriors with a bunch of guys of little consequence. Joey Graham is their best player, Hassan Adams, and John Lucas- those are the 3 names I recognize. But wait, there's also Joel Bosh. I wonder if he's Chris Bosh's brother. And one more name pops out at you...

Rod Benson, of the Boom Tho fame, plays for the Raptors. He's only played in 4 minutes this summer league - that's why the Raptors are 1-3. Not sure why he's not playing more minutes (injury?) but he's a top D-League player, I would assume he'd do well in the summer league as well.

Anyways, last game of the summer league for the Dubs, enjoy it. It's the last bit of Warriors hoops you'll get until preseason.

Oops nevermind, as saintdee points out, we still have 4 more games in the Rocky Mountain Revue starting on Monday.

  • OPEN THREAD: Vegas Game 4 - Warriors vs Kings

    Warriors (3-0) vs Kings (2-1)
    Game Time: 7:00p

Game 4 of the summer league kicks off tonight against the Kings. Rookie Anthony Randolph should be back in the game after missing the last game with a sprained ankle. Marco played extremely well last game and is, as expected, leading the team in scoring. I was hoping for a little more from Brandan Wright in terms of rebounding and scoring. Maybe I was hoping that he would dominate and show he's ready to live up to the potential - I probably am too optimistic. And lastly, after I questioned CJ Watson, he came out and had a niiiice game, statistically speaking - 23 points, 7 assists (more than the first 2 games combined), and 5 steals. The guy has been a klepto this summer racking up 13 steals in 3 games.

I'm also guessing that dreamleague will be there up close and personal to scout out Marco, Wright, Randolph, and the rest of the team. I'll be waiting for his in-depth analysis.

As for the Kings, they're throwing out Patrick Ewing (not sure why they didn't put Jr after his name), Quincy Douby, and the always-feared Spencer Hawes.

The Warriors have this one in the bag. Undefeated summer league? It could happen.

  • Kaz: Match or Let Him Walk?

Ever since news dropped that Kelenna Azubuike signed a 3 year/ $9 million offer sheet with the Clippers, I'm not sure how I feel about whether or not we should match the offer or let him walk. I don't think it's a clear cut decision either way because there are so many variables to juggle.

For a little history, Kaz joined the team 2 years ago as Mullin plucked him mid-season from the D-League. With injuries to JRich and Boom, Kaz wound up getting solid minutes showing he had a nice stroke and could fill minutes when the starterse needed a rest. This past year, he averaged 21 minutes in 81 games, starting in 17 of them. He's got a decent ability to score and rebounds well for a guard, but his defense on the perimeter is suspect. He started the year playing around 30 minutes per game, fell out of favor with Nellie in December and January, and then in the final 2 months found a permanent spot in the rotation.

Hit the jump for some thoughts. Why a bench player deserves so much attention? I have no idea. Maybe it's the boring offseason and there's nothing else to talk about. Maybe people like his attitude and thus a fan favorite. Or maybe we all care that deeply about our Dubs.

Also, check out the Fan Post, Azubuike signs with Clips

    Why I Wouldn't Match

    • Where are his minutes going to come from? Assuming Maggette, Monta, and Jax all play at least 38 minutes per game, that leaves only 30 total minutes at the PG, SG, and SF positions. Nellie has verbally committed to playing Marco more minutes to let him develop. Nellie's committment may be just Nellie talking, but if it's true, Marco gets at least 10 minutes per game. So that total minutes number goes to 20. The Warriors need to pick up a backup PG, so let's give him 7 minutes per night. Okay so we're down to 13 minutes at one of the 3 spots. If Anthony Randolph gets any type of minutes, that'll eat into those minutes as well so we're not looking at many minutes for Kaz if Monta, Jax or Maggette is relied upon more than my estimates.
    • I feel like Mullin and Nelson can find another D-League guy or free agent to fill those minutes. What the Warriors could do is go find a guy who can give them better perimeter defense and sacrifice a little of the scoring and rebounding that Kelenna gives them. Bench guys at the small forward and shooting guard positions seem to be a dime a dozen so I can't imagine that it's too difficult to replace what Kelenna does. Perhaps we can get a guy for a much cheaper price and save the extra money for another deal. Or at least keep Chris Cohan a little richer because that's what really matters.
    • Is this going to block the development of Anthony Randolph? For year 1 of the contract it won't. But next year and the year after, Kelenna and Randolph are both going to want minutes. Is it worth it to keep Kelenna around for 2 extra years if Randolph is going to take his minutes anyways? Seems like a waste of cap space each year.

    Why I Would Match

    • Nellie says he's going to give Marco minutes. He also said Troy Murphy could be an All-Star and Mike Dunleavy was going to have his best season ever. Basically, I wouldn't bank on Marco getting minutes or being that good. I think there's a 50/50 chance that Marco does not get many minutes and without an adequate replacement, you'll see Monta, Jax, and Maggette taking on an increased load. As we saw last year, some of these older players just can't last an entire season playing those many minutes at a high level. Depth is needed. Did I mention that I'm not too high on Marco?
    • Anthony Randolph looked good in 1 game so far in the summer league. He's no guarantee to pan out and become a decent player. There was a reason he dropped to the Warriors at 14. He may be talented, but may never realize that talent either. Kelenna seems to be more of a known quantity. He'll never break out and be a star, but you can count on him to be a solid role player for 15 minutes a night. And who knows, he just might develop a little himself. Hopefully he works on that poor perimeter defense.
    • At $3 million per year, I'd say it's a good deal if he's able to play the number of minutes he did last year. By all indications, with Marco being suspect, Randolph most likely never going to see the floor, Kaz's minutes could go up. So, at that price I'll take a bench player who at 15-20 minutes per game who can score and rebound.

After writing this, I think I've convinced myself of which way to go.

    Match.

Even if Marco and Randolph pan out, Kaz will continue to be a useful bench player.
