As long suffering fans we know that the Warriors lack a domintating low post presence, and have for years. If you look at the Center position, the W's have been especially weak. Even when the Warriors do manage to get someone who can catch the ball in the low post, they usually have some other glaring weakness that makes them a liability. Think the black hole of offense that was Ronny Seikaly, or the 3 point shooting brilliance of Bol.
Since it is the offseason, we have the time to really take a hard look at how bad, is bad. Using the handy 82games.com as a reference we can look at production at the center position. 05-06 The Warriors ranked 28th in production at the center position. Our largest defecit was at the center position where on average we were -5.3 points per game, in additon to being on the short end in FGA, Rebounds, and assists. Considering how many close games the Warriors lost, it is fair to say even a mediocre center who could grab a couple more rebouds a game would have made the difference in getting to the playoffs. Last year doesn't even stand out as the worst year for Warriors centers.
04-05 at the center spot we were -5.8 in pts per game, and -2.6 in rebounding, even worse than last year. Once again, Center was by far the position where the Warriors were the most outclassed. Blocks were better, but rebounds were worse, sounds like Adonal had some minutes. 03-04 Here is the anamoly, and any Warriors fan that has been paying attention knows why. Erik Dampier, in a contract year. Yes, the only thing in the world that can motivate the unmotivated, a large pile of cash. Erik's laser like focus on the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow netted him a career high in total rebounds, rebounds per game, his best offensive rebounding year ever, and his second best year as a pro in total points. Net production by position, Center was the spot where the W's did best this year. The only year since 02-03 where the Warriors have an advantage. 02-03 we fared a little better with only a -3.1 pts per game shortfall, with only Assits at -1.4, FGM and FGA being in the red. Once again on a position by position basis, Center was the worst position for the W's. 01-02 Adonal is our starting center, and while I don't have the differentials the raw numbers speak for themselves. 4.9 RPG 4.8 PPG starting 36 games, and averaging 19 minutes per contest. He had regressed from his 7 rpg 6 ppg breakout season in 00-01.
Drafting Patrick O'Bryant, and the slow development of Andris "I like Inside" Biedrins, there seems to be little hope for a turnaround in 06-07 for the Warriors. If no improvement is made in either the center or power forward spots, the Warriors will miss the playoffs for a 13th consecutive season.
