The Warriors remind me of your typical struggling fly by night Internet company looking for another round of funding to keep the sinking ship afloat for another 6 months. Other than complete failure and impending doom, what do these dissimilar ventures have to do with each other? Movement or perception of movement in an attempt to generate interest. In the case of the internet company it might be a small deal with a big company and a press release. For the Warriors it is often a trade of some kind, often times to acquire a former NBA talent far past their prime, or even a new head coach. These events are often accompanied by sound bites talking about progress, hope, a new attitude, change of direction etc. Ron Siekly, Clifford Robinson, Larry Hughes, Nick Van Exel, Speedy Claxton, Derek Fisher, Bob Lanier, Rick Adelman, P.J. Carlesimo, Gary St Jean, Dave Cowens, Brian Winters, Erik Mussleman, Mike Montgomery. Each of those moves, and others were great opportunities to roll out the party line to a fan base with a short attention span. Coaches 9 coaches in 12 years versus 11 in the franchises first 32 years. Lots of movement, but no playoffs.
- "We're thrilled to bring a coach the caliber of __________________ into the fold. "
- “He’s prepared, he’s organized, and he’s motivated to succeed. We’re going to go through this thing together.”
- “He seems like he’ll give us a good direction for the team,”
- “I like the way he spoke about improving our defense.”
- “We need a guy who can motivate us, but who also knows how to relate to us.”
Players A trade here a trade there, a salary dump over there - "The Golden State Warriors added _________, _________ and __________ to their impressive array of young talent...."
- “Once again, I think we’ve helped our team a great deal,”
- "For the ______ straight year, the Warriors left the NBA draft with ___ players to rebuild a franchise that’s been through ____ straight 60-loss seasons and a league-worst _____-year playoff drought.
- " Huge trade simply a vision"
- "He's going to make other guys better, whether his numbers always reflect that,"
- "...the Warriors adding depth to their roster"
- " _________ has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, but the Warriors hope that's all in the past."
The sad fact of all of this movement, is that it doesn't reflect progress. Still no playoffs, no all stars, no growth, no future. 2 more weeks, every day of every week for every season in sight. When I was at the Warriors season ticket holder upgrade day a few Sundays back, I overheard a fellow STH talking to their ticket rep about rumors of a trade for Allen Iverson. The rep said, "I hope it happens, we will sell a lot more tickets." That right there is the Warriors in a nutshell. Not that a trade will result in making the playoffs, or a championship, but that a trade will create the illusion of progress, which creates excitement, that sells tickets.
