Trade Evaluation: Warriors Greatly Improve Playoff Chances Print E-mail

The 8 player trade that Chris Mullin pulled off this week was an excellent trade for Golden State.  They were extremely lucky to get anyone to take on Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy’s contracts.  Dunleavy has been a colossal failure and has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was not worth being a first round draft pick let alone a top three pick.  He will be a serviceable journeyman type professional for several years, but he will never be anything more than a role player on a very good team.

They will miss Murphy's defensive rebounding ability and his ability to score in the teams half court sets, however, the gain in athleticism that they acquired along with Al Harrington and Stephen Jackson will more than offset any loss of talent that was sent to Indiana.

The key for the Pacers was young Power Forward Ike Diogu and down the road Diogu could be a force on the offensive end of the floor, however his lack of size, defense and basketball IQ would never allow him to flourish on a Don Nelson team.  While Josh Powell does not have the upside of Diogu, he does have better size and a much better overall feel for the game of basketball.

Keith McLeod who was acquired in the Derek Fisher trade was not really a contributor to the Warriors playoff hopes and perhaps the biggest upgrade of this trade is the addition of a true Point Guard and shooting specialist Sarunis Jasicavicius.  The Lithuanian guard has won championships overseas and Olympic medals for his country and will add a toughness and confidence to the backcourt and the Warriors finally have a point guard that can run a pick and roll with Andris Biedrins.

The team got a lot more athletic and increased their toughness and basketball IQ by ten fold.  Jackson really knows how to play the game and will thrive under Nelly.  He is really looking for a fresh start and is extremely happy to be back in the western conference.  Harrington will play well with Baron Davis and although he really doesn't rebound well for a power forward, I believe that he will give the warriors a low post presence on the offensive end that they have not had since Chris Webber.

The team is going to be really deep when everybody is healthy and playing together and really the only piece they are missing now is a tall athletic rebounding PF/C because they are really going to have a hard time getting rebounds with the current roster.  The guards will have to rebound more and hopefully Biedrins can continue to improve in that area.

Another area they will struggle is in the half court or when teams can slow them down in transition, but their transition game should really be improved and toward the end of the game they will have a lot of players capable of getting to the rim or getting fouled.

Overall Mullin did a great job in addressing the needs of the roster and I like their chances of making the playoffs much more than I did before this deal went down
