Nelson is the Perfect Coach For This Team Print E-mail
    Tuesday, 29 August 2006

It looks like the 66 year old basketball mastermind has just enough left in the tank to revive the Golden State Warriors organization one more time before he walks off into the sunset.  It couldn't be a more perfect fit...Don Nelson, Chris Mullin, Mario Ellie, Mitch Richmond, Rod Higgins...What year is it?  The roster that Chris Mullin has assembled is one of the deepest and most versatile in the league.  The only problem was the head coach had no idea how to use it.  Imagine the matchup nightmares Nellie can create with this roster!  All I can say is get ready for your new starting Center Troy Murphy!

Not only does the hiring of Nelson improve the teams chances of winning now, but he will also groom Mario Elie like he did Avery Johnson to fill his shoes when he leaves.  Elie was originally signed by Nelson out of the CBA and is the heir apparent to the coaching throne in Oakland.

What does this mean for certain players on the roster?

PG-Baron Davis - The perfect coach for Baron.  He will have the freedom and ability to create offense that he hasn't had since early in his career.  He will be running things like Tim Hardaway and if he can stay healthy, you can expect a career statistical year for Baron in 2006-2007.

SG-Jason Richardson- Like Richmond he will be the anchor and the rock to carry the scoring load night in and night out.  When he has the hot hand you can expect Nelson to ride him to some huge scoring performances.  Monta Ellis will probably have a love/hate relationship with Nelson because he will be given a big role and be screamed at every step of the way, but in the end he will be a much better player for it, and his development curve will be fast forwarded by at least two years.

SF-Mike Dunleavy- Perhaps the player that will benefit most from the Nelson system is Mike Dunleavy.  Mike is versatile enough and intelligent enough to figure out Nellies point forward philosophy.  You will see Dunleavy handling the ball quite a bit on offense and Nelson will figure out a way to best utilize his skills.  Mikael Pietrus will either get smarter or he will be glued to the bench.  Everytime he makes one of his bonehead decisions he will be instantly pulled from the game.  It will force him to either reach his potential or he is going to be the first player to demand a trade.

PF-Ike Diogu- Could be a candidate to struggle under Nelson.  Diogu will need to get a lot better at doing dirty work if he expects to keep himself on the floor with Don Nelson as the coach.  I could see Nellie falling in love with Zarko Cabarkapa and his skillset and size.  Zarko will benefit greatly from Nelson and I would look for him to be used quite a bit at three different positions.

C-Troy Murphy- Don't be surprised if Murphy becomes a key component of the Nelson offense.  Nellie will show Murphy how to pass effectively out of the high post and will actually have some options for him to work with.  Look for big improvements in his efficiency this season without a drop in his production.  Murphy is a Nellie type guy in terms of skills and sense of humor.  If Nellie could make Tolbert and effective player imagine what he can do with Murph.  Foyle will become useful as a specialist off the bench to come in and block shots and change the tempo of a game when needed.  It will be along year for Andris Biedrins and Patrick O'bryant but they will become men.

Mark Stein of ESPN say's that the addition of Nelson as head coach alone is the best move the team could have made in the off-season and that he see's the Warriors as a playoff team in the west with Nellie at the helm and I couldn't agree more!  My hat's off to the Warriors organization for getting it right this time.
