Preaching Coaching

Mark Jackson likes to move. Perhaps this is why he's away from a studio, away from the announcer's chair. The game compels him to bounce up and down the sideline as though invisible giants are volleying him about with tennis rackets. Wait, did I say "racket" when I meant "racquet"? Anyway, that reminds of just how much yelling Mark Jackson does as he patrols his area. If coaches do this in spurts, Jackson's ...

Nate and the Bench Mob

Robinson. Thompson. Rush. McGuire. Udoh. Like the snobbiest of Bulls fans, the “bench mob” is my favorite part of the game. You see, the GSW Russian Matryoshka doll has a soft Ellis-Curry-Wright-Lee-Biedrins exterior that hides this scrappy, hardened second unit. It's always a fun, shocking contrast, to behold the secret defensive layer. After so many years of seeing absolutely no defensive facet from Golde ...

On GSW Homerism

I read two kinds of accusations, via Twitter, email, WarriorsWorld forums. Either I’m making hay from Warriors negativity, or engaging in homeristic sugar coating. Well, I try to be honest in this space, so here’s an admission that probably applies to more writers than myself: It is very difficult not to root for a team while covering it. Media has a reputation for wringing negative events for drama, and th ...

Dre’s Low Point

There was a moment, with roughly 10 minutes left in the third quarter of Warriors-Thunder. After successfully tapping out an offensive rebound, Andris strolled a few paces towards half court. In no rush to get back on offense, he turned, trundled slowly. Literal foot dragging drearily evolved into a perfunctory jog towards the hoop. Ellis was above the arc to Dre’s right, and Biedrins had position to catch ...

The Reverse: Spaced Out Blazers

(The Reverse is a recap from the opposite end. Here we have a 101-93 win over Portland, Mark Jackson's thoughts on plus-minus, Jackson's thoughts on Biedrins and free throw shooting, among some interesting Curry/Lee/Udoh quotes. Bolded emphasis on quotes comes from me.) Opening thought: GSW beat Portland by using space effectively on pick and roll situations. That, or the Blazers were too aggressive in putt ...

Be more like the Wizards

Is it dramatic irony? I feel like I know what will happen to GSW even if they do not. In order to prove a new culture, Mark Jackson will strive to win every game. The Warriors will win just enough to lose their top-seven protected pick, thus maintaining the old high lottery culture. And the Sisyphus ball keeps rolling. Per Hollinger odds, the Warriors have a better shot of winning the NBA lotto (4.5%) than ...

The Reverse: Memphis Mistakes

(The Reverse is a recap flipped backwards, possibly shaken--like GSW was against Memphis in the 4th) Much of the focus here will be on the fourth quarter, wherein Memphis charged back from 17 down and 7:26 to play. The Grizzlies scored 39 points in the period despite only hitting one shot from beyond the arc. The Warriors gave up nine turnovers, 16 fastbreak points. These numbers speak for themselves in blo ...

Udoh & the Indiana drought

Forgive me this Ekpe Udoh obsession, but he has a basin scraping 7.3 player efficiency rating while leading his team in plus-minus. A stat like plus-minus is easy to dismiss early on, but Udoh led the team last year as well. I don't believe this to be a coincidence. Though the Warriors recently ceded a close one to the oddly good Pacers, a nice second quarter defensive stretch helped the GSW cause. With Ekp ...
