Coach K: Stephen Curry Is ‘One Of The Great Players In The League’
On Wednesday afternoon, it was reported that Stephen Curry, Andre Iguodala, David Lee, and Klay Thompson were selected to the USA Men’s National Team pool. Although Curry played sparingly for USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski during the World Championship in Istanbul four years ago, Krzyzewski was very complimentary of the Warriors point guard.
Coach K called Curry one of the great players in the league and is an easy guy to play with according to San Francisco Chronicle’s Rusty Simmons:
“He’s terrific,” Krzyzewski said. “He was a young guy on our World Championship team in Instabul, and he’s become one of the great players in the league. He’s one of the unique players, in the fact that he can play either guard because he’s such a terrific scorer. He’s an easy guy to play. I just love him. He’s definitely not afraid, and he’s having a sensational year.
Although Curry only averaged 4.6 points and 1.7 assists in limited minutes in the 2010 World Championship, he returned a much better player for the Warriors. Like most young players that participate for Team USA, Curry used that experience to propel his NBA career.
While he should have been selected to the 2013 All-Star Game, Curry will likely be named a starter on Thursday as he surpassed Clippers’ Chris Paul in the latest results two weeks ago. If he is selected as a starter, he will be Golden State’s first since Latrell Sprewell in 1995.
In 40 games this season, Curry is averaging 23.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 9.2 assists.
